Why study in the USA?
With thousands of universities and colleges across 50 states, the USA gives you the freedom to design a degree around your interests. Many students start with broad subjects in their first year before declaring a major, so you have room to explore.
American universities lead the world in research, innovation, and industry links. From technology hubs in California to finance and media in New York, you study close to the companies and ideas shaping the future.
A US degree is recognised everywhere, and the campus experience - clubs, sports, diverse classmates from around the world - helps you grow personally as well as academically.
Popular fields of study
International students in the USA pursue a wide range of subjects. Some of the most in-demand include:
- Engineering and Computer Science
- Business, Finance, and Management
- Data Science and Artificial Intelligence
- Health Sciences, Nursing, and Pre-Med
- Natural and Physical Sciences
- Liberal Arts, Media, and Design
Tuition, living costs, and intakes
Tuition varies widely by institution. Public universities typically charge international students around USD 25,000-40,000 per year, while private universities often range from USD 40,000-60,000+ per year.
Living costs depend on the city. Budget roughly USD 12,000-20,000 per year for accommodation, food, transport, and personal expenses - higher in cities like New York, Boston, and San Francisco.
The main intake is Fall (August/September), with a smaller Spring intake (January) at many universities. It is best to begin your application 9-12 months ahead.
Good news for many applicants: a growing number of US programs are now test-optional, meaning the SAT (undergraduate) or GRE (postgraduate) may not be required. Your IDP counsellor will confirm each university's policy.
The F-1 student visa and working in the USA
Most international students study in the USA on an F-1 visa. Here is what to know:
- You apply for the F-1 visa after a university issues your Form I-20.
- You can work part-time on campus, usually up to 20 hours per week during term.
- After graduation, Optional Practical Training (OPT) lets you work in the USA for up to 12 months in your field.
- Graduates of eligible STEM degrees can extend OPT by an additional 24 months (STEM OPT), for up to 3 years of work experience.
- You must show proof of funds and attend a visa interview at the US Embassy in Kuwait.
Most US universities accept IELTS for English proficiency, commonly asking for an overall band of 6.0-7.0. You can take IELTS with IDP - a co-owner of the test - right here in Kuwait, with free preparation resources to help you reach your target score.

What IELTS score do US universities require?
Most universities ask for an overall IELTS band of 6.0-7.0, though top programs may want more. We will confirm the exact requirement for your chosen courses.
