After receiving an offer

Congratulations, an offer letter is a big moment. But it is not quite the finish line. Before you can pack your bags, there are a few important steps: understanding the type of offer you have, accepting it, paying your deposit and receiving the official document your visa will depend on. At IDP Kuwait, our counsellors guide you through every one of these steps, free of charge.

Conditional vs unconditional offers

Your offer letter will be one of two types. Knowing which you have tells you exactly what to do next.

Conditional offer

The university wants you, but you still need to meet one or more conditions, most often a final IELTS score, completed final-year results or a deposit, before the place is confirmed.

Unconditional offer

You have met every requirement. The place is yours to accept, and you can move straight on to confirming it and starting your visa preparation.

How to accept your offer and pay your deposit

Once you decide on the university that is right for you, here is how to lock in your place.

  1. 1

    Read the offer carefully

Check the course name, start date, tuition fee, any conditions and the deadline to respond. Ask your IDP counsellor about anything that is unclear.

  2. 2

    Formally accept

Reply through the university portal or acceptance form, confirming you wish to take up the place for the stated intake.

  3. 3

    Pay your tuition deposit

Most universities ask for an initial deposit to secure your seat. Keep the receipt, as you will often need it for your visa application.

  4. 4

    Request your confirmation document

After your deposit clears, the university issues the official document your student visa is built on.

Your confirmation document by country

Each destination has its own name for the document that proves you have a place and unlocks your visa application.

United Kingdom — CAS

A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, a reference number you enter on your Student visa application.

United States — I-20

Issued by the university for your F-1 visa, used to pay the SEVIS fee and book your embassy interview.

Australia — CoE

A Confirmation of Enrolment, the key document for your Australian student visa lodged online.

Canada — Letter of Acceptance

Your official Letter of Acceptance, required for your study permit along with a provincial attestation letter where needed.

Meeting your conditions

If your offer is conditional, clear each item as early as you can so nothing delays your visa.

  • Achieve the IELTS score the offer states, including any minimum for each section. IDP can help you book a re-sit quickly if you need a higher band.
  • Submit your final transcripts or graduation certificate once results are out.
  • Pay the required deposit by the deadline.
  • Provide any extra documents, such as a personal statement, reference letter or proof of funds.
  • Send everything through the university portal and keep copies of every confirmation.

Deferring to a later intake

Plans change, and sometimes the timing is not right. Many universities allow you to defer your offer to the next available intake, for example moving from a September start to the following January or September.

Deferral is usually requested in writing through the university, and policies vary: some hold your deposit, others ask you to reapply for scholarships, and a few do not permit deferral on certain courses. Always confirm in writing before you assume your place is held.

Your IDP counsellor can contact the university on your behalf, explain your options and make sure a deferral does not affect your visa timeline or any conditions still attached to your offer.

Common questions

Can I accept more than one offer?

You can hold several offers while you decide, but you should only pay a deposit and firmly accept one, as that is the place your visa will be based on.

Is my deposit refundable?

It depends on the university. Some refund it if your visa is refused; others do not. Check the refund policy in writing before paying, and your counsellor can help you read the terms.

How long does it take to receive my CAS, I-20 or CoE?

Usually a few days to a couple of weeks after your deposit and any conditions are cleared. Apply and pay early so you have time for your visa.

Does IDP charge for this support?

No. IDP's counselling, application and offer-acceptance guidance for Kuwait students is free.
