Why choose Australia?
Australia is home to the prestigious Group of Eight (Go8) research universities, several of which rank among the best in the world. Degrees are globally recognised, and the country is known for high-quality teaching, modern campuses and strong support for international students.
Beyond the classroom, Australia consistently ranks among the world's best places to live, with safe cities, an outdoor lifestyle, a warm multicultural community and a large, well-established Kuwaiti and Arab student presence.
IDP began in Australia, and helping students reach Australian universities is at the heart of what we do. That means honest, up-to-date advice and direct relationships with the institutions you are applying to.
Popular fields of study
Australia offers strong programmes across these in-demand areas:
- Engineering (civil, mechanical, mining and renewable energy)
- Business, accounting and management
- Information technology, data science and cybersecurity
- Health sciences, nursing and medicine
- Hospitality, tourism and event management
- Environmental science and sustainability
Tuition, living costs and intakes
Undergraduate tuition typically ranges from about AUD 25,000 to 45,000 per year, while postgraduate and specialised programmes such as medicine usually cost more. Living expenses are commonly estimated at around AUD 25,000 to 30,000 per year, depending on your city and lifestyle.
Most universities have two main intakes: February (Semester 1) and July (Semester 2). Some courses also offer a smaller November intake. We recommend starting your application several months ahead to allow time for offers, deposits and your visa.
Student visa and work rights
Key points about studying in Australia on the Student visa (subclass 500):
- Most international students study on the Student visa (subclass 500), which covers the full length of your course.
- You must meet the Genuine Student (GS) requirement, showing that your main purpose is to study and that you intend to comply with your visa conditions.
- Students can usually work part-time during their studies (up to a capped number of hours per fortnight while classes are in session) and full-time during scheduled breaks.
- After graduating, eligible students may apply for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) to live, work and gain experience in Australia.
- You will also need Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of your studies.
Australian universities require proof of English, and IELTS is the most widely accepted test, with typical entry scores of 6.0 to 6.5 overall. IDP co-owns IELTS and is Australian-founded, so you can book your IELTS test and access free preparation resources directly through IDP IELTS Kuwait.

Frequently asked questions
What IELTS score do I need for Australia?
Most universities ask for an overall IELTS band of 6.0 to 6.5, though competitive or specialised courses such as nursing and medicine may require 7.0 or higher. We will confirm the exact requirement for your chosen course.
Can I work while studying in Australia?
Yes. On a subclass 500 visa you can usually work part-time up to a capped number of hours each fortnight while classes are in session, and full-time during official course breaks.
When should I apply?
Aim to start three to six months before your intended February or July intake. This gives enough time for offers, your deposit, your CoE and the visa process.
