How do I apply?

Once you know where and what you want to study, applying is simply a matter of following the right steps in the right order. From your shortlist to your documents and deadlines, this guide breaks the process down, and shows how IDP can manage the whole application for you at no cost.

The application process step by step

Follow these stages and the process becomes far less daunting.

  1. 1

    Shortlist your universities

Choose a focused list of universities and courses that match your goals, grades and budget, ideally a mix of ambitious and safe options.

  2. 2

    Gather your documents

Collect your academic transcripts, personal statement or SOP, references, IELTS results and a valid passport. Start early, as some take time to obtain.

  3. 3

    Check intakes and deadlines

Each university has set intake dates and application deadlines. Note them carefully and work backwards to plan your IELTS and submission.

  4. 4

    Submit your applications

Apply to each university through the correct portal, making sure every document is complete, accurate and uploaded in the right format.

  5. 5

    Track and respond

Monitor your applications, respond quickly to any requests, and review your offers when they arrive before you accept.

Documents you will usually need

Requirements vary by university, but most ask for the following.

  • Academic transcripts and certificates
  • A personal statement or statement of purpose (SOP)
  • One or more academic or professional references
  • Your IELTS results, meeting the university's required score
  • A valid passport and any required identity documents
  • An updated CV, for some postgraduate courses

Applying to UK undergraduate courses through UCAS

If you are applying for an undergraduate degree in the UK, you will usually apply through UCAS, a single online system that lets you apply to several universities in one application.

UCAS has its own structure and deadlines, including one personal statement shared across all your choices. It can feel complex the first time, which is exactly where guidance makes the difference. See our dedicated UCAS guide for the full details.

Your personal statement or SOP is often what sets you apart from other applicants with similar grades. Be specific about why you chose this course, what you bring and where you want it to lead. Give yourself time to draft and refine it, and ask for feedback.

Common questions

How early should I start my application?

Ideally nine to twelve months before your intended intake. This gives you time to sit IELTS, prepare documents and meet deadlines comfortably.

Can I apply to more than one university?

Yes, and we recommend it. Applying to several universities improves your chances and gives you choices when offers arrive.

Do I really need IELTS to apply?

For almost all English-taught programmes, yes. IELTS is the most widely accepted proof of English, and IDP can help you prepare and book your test.

How much does IDP charge to manage my application?

IDP's counselling and application support is free for students. You only pay the university's own fees where they apply.
