IELTS Academic or General Training?
They share the same Listening and Speaking, but differ in Reading and Writing — and which one you need depends entirely on your goal.
Choosing the wrong version is the most common avoidable mistake. The receiving organisation — your university, employer, professional body or immigration authority — decides which test you need, so always confirm with them before booking.
Choose Academic if you are
- Applying to a university or college for an undergraduate or postgraduate course.
- Seeking professional registration (for example medicine, nursing, engineering).
Choose General Training if you are
- Applying for work or a work visa.
- Migrating to Australia, Canada, the UK or New Zealand.
- Doing secondary education or a training programme below degree level.
How they differ
Reading and Writing differ; Listening and Speaking are identical. Academic Reading uses long passages from journals and books, while General Training uses everyday and workplace texts. In Writing, Academic Task 1 describes a graph or diagram, whereas General Training Task 1 is a letter. Task 2 is an essay in both.
For UK visas you may need IELTS for UKVI — a version taken at an approved centre under extra security. IDP IELTS Kuwait offers UKVI Academic and General Training. Confirm the exact requirement with UKVI or your sponsor.
